Manson were appointed on the project in 2013; it formed part of a proposed masterplan for the Lansdowne area in Bournemouth. The site formed part of a 1960’s telecom building located on Holdenhurst Road. The brief was to create approximately 100,000 sq ft of teaching facility for the Nursing Faculty of Bournemouth University. The accommodation also included social spaces, café areas and entrances for students.
Our solution was based around the creation of dynamic public realm spaces surrounding the buildings active frontages. A new landscaped, pedestrianised area would be created adjacent to the building ensuring pedestrian permeability to the university facilities surrounding the site. The existing townscape geometry is varied with brick built Victorian façades, 1960’s concrete offices and retail shop frontages.
The new building was created as two parallel, juxtaposed blocks located at right angles to Holdenhurst Road. The buildings are designed at two different heights creating the skyline variety. Glazed frontages and coloured panel façade systems add to the main road articulation and variety. Planning Approval was obtained in 2015 and construction will commence in 2018.
