Innovative creation of co-living communal housing on a challenging site in Exeter

Previously used as an Ambulance Depot the site acted as a transition between Victorian terraced properties and a large scale Police Headquarters in the Heavitree area of Exeter.

The sensitive proposals created an elegant and exemplary design solution which promoted the adoption of the successful urban grain in Exeter. The building splits into two distinct sections along Gladstone Road through a change in level and interesting stepped arrangement.

In response to the Victorian terraced housing a series of pitched roof forms and dormer windows allowed for the building eaves level to be lowered and reduced the overall massing considerably.

The 133 studio based Co-living scheme will become an important part of the community within Exeter and offer residents a range of shared social spaces including a communal kitchen, gym, games area, cinema room and courtyard garden. The project was highly commended in the 2022 Planning Awards.
