Redesigning a unique retail unit site into a new flag ship store with flatted dwellings above

Manson were appointed by Scotmid Co-operative in 2018 to provide planning and architectural services for the redevelopment of an existing Scotmid store on Leven Street in the centre of Edinburgh. The redevelopment included a new Class 1 retail unit on the ground floor and eight flatted dwellings above the store to be rented on the housing market.  The flatted dwellings were a mix of studio, 1 bed and duplex flats.

Manson prepared and submitted an application for listed building consent and a detailed planning application which were approved in August 2019 and the project commenced on site in November 2019.

A temporary store remained open throughout the construction phase to ensure the store could continue trading while partial demolition took place and then the new build flats constructed.

Manson were proud to work with Scotmid Co-operative on such a prominent central Edinburgh site with such an interesting history. The original store was built in 1959 and was the first American-Style shopping experience in Edinburgh.
